A day trip shows you Phi Phi's famous stops in about nine hours door to door; a night on Phi Phi Don adds the island in the evening and the viewpoint at dawn, when the day boats have gone. If you have the spare day and do not mind a small bag, stay the night — otherwise the day trip covers the same places.

What do you see in a day?
All the headline places. On Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai island the pickup is at 07:30, the boat leaves Chalong at 09:15, and by 16:15 you are back with Khai island, Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don, the Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay done. The catch is time on the boat. A day trip spends a good part of its length getting there and back, and every stop is a slot in a schedule. You see Phi Phi — you just do not get to sit still on it. What does the night add?
The hours nobody on a day boat gets. On Phi Phi, two days and one night you check into a hotel on Phi Phi Don at 15:50, have dinner at 19:50, and the fire show on the sand starts at half past eight. Then the morning. Breakfast runs until ten, and at 10:30 you climb to the viewpoint over the archipelago while it is still quiet. That view, with nobody in front of you, is honestly the best argument for staying.
Is the overnight trip just the day trip plus a hotel?
No, the order changes. Day one of the two-day trip starts with Maya Bay at 09:50, then Pileh Lagoon, the Viking Cave, a snorkel and Bamboo island — before lunch. Day two brings Monkey Beach, another snorkel and a stop at Rang Yai with fishing for anyone who wants it, back at the pier at 17:00.
Two lunches, one dinner, one breakfast, the room, park fees and transport are all included. Up to thirty people.
Who should pick which?
Day trip, if the holiday is short, if the kids sleep better in their own beds, or if one crossing each way is enough for your stomach. Overnight, if you are a couple or a group of friends, if the viewpoint at dawn and an evening on the island sound good, or if you have more than five days here anyway.

What about Four pearls and Five pearls?
They are two-day trips too, but they spend day one outside Phi Phi. Four pearls lands on James Bond island at 10:10, canoes at Talu, eats in Panyi, reaches Railay and the Princess Cave at 13:50, Chicken island at 16:05, and checks in on Phi Phi Don at 16:50. Maya Bay is at 09:00 the next morning. Up to twenty-five people.
Five pearls follows a similar line via Lao Lading and the Hong island viewpoint, with dinner and wine, an optional night swim among glowing plankton, a fire show and a Thai boxing introduction. On day two Maya Bay is at 09:45, seen from the boat when the bay is closed. On both, the Phi Phi Don viewpoint ticket is 50 ฿ on the spot. Is there a middle option?
Two, depending on what bothers you about the day trip. If it is the crowds, Phi Phi at sunrise puts you in Maya Bay from seven to eight and is back at 15:30. If it is the rush, the catamaran starts at Racha Yai, reaches Maya Bay after four and ends with a sunset on the water by Maiton, back at 19:00. Both are still one day, with no bag to pack and no hotel. What should I pack for the night?
A small bag, not a suitcase: swimwear, a change of clothes, a charger, sunscreen, toothbrush. Phi Phi has no cars, and you will carry it along wooden walkways. One more thing: the return crossing happens on day two. If the sea closes, it waits. Keep a free day between the trip and your flight home.
