Can you actually swim at Maya Bay?

When is Maya Bay least crowded?

At seven in the morning. On Phi Phi at sunrise we collect you between four and half past four, the boat leaves at 05:50, and you are in the bay from seven to eight — before the day boats. It is the trip I would book if an almost empty beach is the whole point.

On Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai island the bay is the last stop, at 15:15 — snorkelling and swimming from the water beside it — and you are back at Chalong around 16:15. On Phi Phi with Bamboo and fishing you walk in along the boardwalk at 11:35, no swimming inside.

On both you pay the park fee in cash on the day. If Phi Phi as a whole day is what you are after, rather than Maya Bay as the one goal, these make sense.

Is going late in the day any good?

Surprisingly good. The catamaran gets to Maya Bay between four and five, when the day boats have left, and then sits on the water by Maiton island for the sunset. Comfort+ format, back on Phuket at 19:00. The eleven-islands day arrives at 16:30, after Phang Nga Bay and Hong island.

On the two-day trips Maya Bay is a morning thing on day two: 09:00 on Four pearls, 09:45 on Five pearls (seen from the boat if the bay is closed), and 09:50 on the first morning of the Phi Phi two-day trip.

Pileh Lagoon — green water inside a ring of cliffs — and the Viking Cave, where swiftlet nests are still gathered. Most boats do all three in one sweep, then cross to Phi Phi Don for lunch and Monkey Beach.
