Koh Panyi Floating Village: Visiting from Phuket

By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 12 October 2026

Koh Panyi is the village built on stilts over the water of Phang Nga Bay, and four of our tours from Phuket stop there, usually for lunch. It is a working Muslim community, not a show — cover shoulders and knees, and treat it as someone's neighbourhood.

Which tours stop at Koh Panyi?

The classic James Bond island and Phang Nga Bay day: seafood lunch at a restaurant on stilts from 14:00, then an hour in the village from 15:00. The eleven-islands day stops at Panyi at 11:40 for lunch. Four pearls has lunch in Panyi village at 11:50 on day one; Five pearls at 11:30. None of these trips goes up to Samet Nangshe; for that viewpoint and the bay at water level, see Samet Nangshe and James Bond island in one day. Where the two pearls trips go after Panyi, Railay or Hong island, is on Five Pearls or Four Pearls. If you're weighing the longtail day through Panyi against the Samet Nangshe viewpoint day, see Samet Nangshe or James Bond island from Phuket.

On all of them Panyi comes after James Bond island and the kayaks, so you arrive hungry — which is the right way to arrive. Not sure whether to take the longtail day or the long speedboat run? We compare them on James Bond island by speedboat or longtail. And whether the longtail day as a whole is worth it is on is the James Bond island tour worth it.

    What is the village like?

Houses, shops and walkways, all standing on stilts in the sea of Phang Nga Bay. The restaurants face the water, and lunch is seafood with the bay in front of you. Our cards describe it two ways — a Muslim village built out over the sea, and the old sea gypsy settlement — and both are part of how it is known.

You walk along narrow boardwalks between stalls selling dried seafood, pearls and souvenirs. It is compact; an hour is enough to see it without rushing.

What should I wear and how should I behave?

Cover shoulders and knees when you walk through — keep the swimwear for the boat. Ask before photographing people, especially up close. It is a working community with its own rules; the guide will tell you what to watch for.

Souvenirs bought in the village are your own spending, not part of the tour price.

What happens before and after Koh Panyi?

On the classic longtail day, the morning is the bay: boarding at the pier at 09:30, the limestone towers, a landing on James Bond island around 11:30, then kayaks into caves and hidden lagoons with a guide paddling. Koh Panyi is the finale — lunch at 14:00, the village at 15:00, the longtail back to the pier at 16:00. To book it, see how to book a James Bond island tour.

On the eleven-islands day, Panyi is the lunch stop after the mangrove kayaks at Talu; the afternoon moves on to Lao Lading, Hong island and Phi Phi. On Four pearls, lunch in Panyi comes before the crossing to Railay; on Five pearls, before Lao Lading and Hong. Whether the whole Five pearls trip is worth two days is weighed on Five Pearls: is it worth it. On Five Pearls the same day ends with an optional swim in the glowing plankton off Phi Phi Don, set out on glowing plankton from Phuket. That Hong is the Krabi one with the viewpoint; the Phang Nga Hong is a kayak stop near Panyi, explained in which Hong island is on a James Bond tour.

Is Koh Panyi good for children?

Yes, with a hand held on the boardwalks — they are narrow and over water. The James Bond island day has no pre-dawn start, calm water and a guided kayak, and children under four travel free. On the eleven-islands day under-fours travel free too, but it is about fourteen hours door to door.

Can I go to Koh Panyi without a tour?

People do, by driving to a pier in Phang Nga and hiring a longtail — roughly two hours by road each way, with the park fee paid separately at the entrance to the bay. Our guide to getting to James Bond island covers that route and what to agree at the pier.

On a tour, lunch in the village, the longtail and the park fees are already arranged. Which parts of the James Bond day are prepaid, kayak included: canoeing and park fees on a James Bond tour. Not sure Phang Nga is for you? James Bond island or Coral Island compares it with a beach day.

When is the best time to be there?

Around lunchtime, which is when every one of our tours stops. On the longtail day you arrive after the kayaks, around two in the afternoon, and have lunch before walking the village; on the speedboat runs Panyi is a late-morning lunch stop between the bay and Krabi. Bring a hat for the walk between the stalls.

Is Koh Panyi worth it on its own?

As part of a Phang Nga day, yes — the lunch over the water is one of the better meals on any tour, and the village is unlike anything on Phuket. As a trip by itself, no: it belongs with the bay, the rock and the kayaks.

If you want the bay at its calmest and the longest time around the village, pick the longtail day. More in James Bond island tours. Days that travel by road rather than by speedboat are collected on land tours from Phuket.

The village comes at the end of a long morning on the water, so a hat and water for the boardwalks help. Take small notes if you plan to buy dried seafood or pearls. The longtail back to the pier leaves on the guide's call — keep an eye on the time. After Koh Panyi, two of our trips carry on to Hong in Krabi; Krabi four islands or Hong island compares them with the one-day Krabi boat.

Worth knowingKoh Panyi is someone's home, not a museum. Dress modestly, keep your voice down in the lanes, and ask before photographing children.
