Is the James Bond Island Tour from Phuket Worth It?
By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 3 October 2026
Yes, if Phang Nga Bay itself is what you want: our James Bond island day from Phuket gives you an hour at the Ko Tapu rock, sea kayaks into caves with a boatman doing the paddling, a seafood lunch over the water and an hour in the stilt village of Koh Panyi, all on sheltered water. No, if you came for white beaches and snorkelling, because this is a bay and cave day with about an hour and a half on the road each way.

What you see on the day, hour by hour
The minivan collects you between 07:30 and 08:00, and then it's road for a while: an hour and a half through mainland Thailand to the pier. At 09:30 you get a life jacket, a short safety talk and a seat in a traditional longtail. From ten until half past eleven the boat threads between the limestone towers. Green water, cliffs straight up, almost no swell.
Around 11:30 you land on James Bond island and have an hour there. At 12:30 the kayaks come out, and a local boatman paddles each one through low sea caves into lagoons you can't see from outside. Lunch at two is seafood in a restaurant on stilts. From three to four you're in Koh Panyi, the Muslim village built out over the bay. The longtail has you back at the pier by 16:30 and the van has you on Phuket around 18:00. Every time is on the James Bond island card. If the view from above tempts you more than the landing, Samet Nangshe or James Bond island compares this day with the viewpoint day.
The rock itself: an hour, and a busy photo spot
Let's be straight about it. Ko Tapu is a needle of limestone standing in the water, and the island next to it is where everyone takes the same picture. An hour is plenty. If the rock were the whole day, it wouldn't be worth the drive.
It isn't the whole day, though. The kayaks are what people talk about on the drive home: the boatman ducks you under a cave roof and you come out in a lagoon walled in by cliffs. Some caves only open at certain tides, so the guide may swap the order of stops. Koh Panyi is a working community with its own rules, not a show, so cover up and treat it as someone's street.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
It suits people who get seasick, because the longtail stays inside the sheltered bay. Older travellers, too: there's no long walking and no speedboat slamming over waves. Families do fine, since under-fours travel free and the kayaking needs no experience at all. And if you've already done Phi Phi, this is the other half of the coast.
Skip it if beaches and snorkelling are what you're after. Our card says it plainly: this is a bay and cave day, and most people stay dry apart from their feet. Skip it if three hours in a van in one day sounds bad. And if you only want the view of the bay, there are shorter ways to get it; Samet Nangshe or Beyond Skywalk compares them. Whether a viewpoint and the island fit into one day is answered on Samet Nangshe and James Bond island in one day.
- Phang Nga Bay properly, on calm water — James Bond island and Phang Nga Bay
- White sand and a first snorkel — Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai island
- The bay at dawn, back at the hotel by 13:00 — sunrise on the glass skywalk
- The rock as one stop among many — the eleven-islands day
- Phang Nga from above, no boat at all — Phang Nga and Samet Nangshe
Longtail or speedboat for Phang Nga Bay
We've compared the boats in detail on speedboat, big boat, catamaran or longtail and the two James Bond formats on James Bond island by speedboat or longtail, so here's only the short version. The longtail day spends all its boat time inside the bay, with an hour on the island.
The eleven-islands day goes by speedboat, lands on the rock at 10:20 and then carries on to Talu, Panyi, Lao Lading, Hong island and Phi Phi, home around 20:00. More ground covered, much less time at each place, and open water between the archipelagos.
What is included, and what you pay on the day
The price covers hotel transfer both ways, the longtail trips, kayaking with a guide and equipment, the seafood lunch, life jackets, drinking water and soft drinks, tropical fruit, national park entrance fees and medical insurance. So the park fee is already in, which isn't true of every sea trip from Phuket.
What you pay yourself: souvenirs in the floating village, extra drinks at the restaurant, alcohol, professional photos and video, and tips for the guides and boatmen. The current price is in the table on this page, straight from our booking system.
Weather, tides and when to go
Our card makes two promises about nature, and both are honest ones: bad weather can change the programme, and some caves can only be passed at certain tides. That's why the order of stops is settled on the day and why we treat the times as a guide. The bay is sheltered water, which is why the longtail ride itself stays calm.
Planning the wet months? Read rainy season tours for how we think about sea days then. And keep a spare day in your holiday after any boat trip, just in case. What else runs in the wettest weeks is on Phuket tours in October.
Guide, children and booking
Every tour in our catalogue runs with an English-speaking guide. Children under four travel free; children aged 4 to 9 pay the child price, the same bands as on our other tours (child prices).
Payment is agreed in the chat after the booking is confirmed, and cancellation terms are something to ask when booking. Send us the tour, the date, your hotel and everyone's ages, and we confirm the pickup time. The steps are on how to book a James Bond island tour. Already done Phi Phi? The other options are on day trips from Phuket after Phi Phi. Planning both in one go? Four Pearls or separate day trips weighs one two-day trip against two single days.

Questions people ask
Is the James Bond island tour from Phuket worth it?
Yes, for Phang Nga Bay: an hour at the rock, kayaks into sea caves, lunch over the water and Koh Panyi, all on calm water. Less so if you want beaches and snorkelling; a Phi Phi day fits that better.
Are national park fees included?
Yes. On our James Bond island and Phang Nga Bay day the national park entrance fees are in the price, together with lunch, kayaking, life jackets and the hotel transfer.
Is a speedboat or a longtail better for Phang Nga Bay?
The longtail, if the bay is the point: sheltered water and an hour on the island. The eleven-islands speedboat lands on the rock at 10:20 and moves on to Krabi and Phi Phi in one long run.
Do I have to paddle the kayak?
No. A local boatman paddles each kayak through the caves and lagoons, so it suits any level and you can just sit and look.
Is there an English-speaking guide?
Yes. Every tour in our catalogue runs with an English-speaking guide.
How long is the day?
Eight to nine hours. Pickup is 07:30 to 08:00 and you are back on Phuket around 18:00, with about an hour and a half on the road each way.
Is James Bond Island canoeing suitable for non-swimmers?
Yes. A local boatman paddles each kayak through the caves while you sit, life jackets are part of the day, and the water is a sheltered bay rather than open sea. It's a bay and cave day rather than a beach day, and most people stay dry apart from their feet.
