Phi Phi with Khai Island or Bamboo Island: Which Day Trip from Phuket?

By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 12 October 2026

Never snorkelled, or travelling with kids who haven't? Take the Khai day: shallow water first thing, a later pickup and a swim beside Maya Bay in the afternoon. If you'd rather have the softest sand of the trip and don't mind a 06:50 pickup, take the Bamboo day, which also ends with hand-line fishing at Rang Yai.

How do the two days run, hour by hour?

Khai first. The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai day collects you from 07:30 and drives you to Chalong pier, and the boat goes at 09:15. Half an hour later you're at Khai, mask on, in water you can see your feet through. After that it's Phi Phi Don and Monkey Beach, a buffet lunch on shore at 12:15, the Viking Cave and Pileh Lagoon from 13:20. Maya Bay comes last, at 15:15. Chalong again at 16:15.

The Bamboo one wakes you earlier. On the Phi Phi, Bamboo island and fishing day pickup is around 06:50, there's tea and coffee at the pier, and you're off at 08:30. Bamboo island at 09:30. Then the Viking Cave (from the boat), Pileh at 11:00, Maya Bay at 11:35, lunch at a beach restaurant on Phi Phi Don at 12:25. Snorkelling at 13:30, Monkey Beach at 14:05, fishing at Rang Yai at 15:05, pier at 16:30.

Khai or Bamboo: which beach is it really about?

Khai is where people put a mask on for the first time. Shallow, clear, and the fish swim right up to the sand, so the first try happens a few steps from the beach rather than off the side of a boat. You get half an hour there. Then the speedboat moves on.

Bamboo is the one on the postcards: sand like flour, green water. It's also the first proper stop of that day, so you have it before lunch and before you're tired. Someone in your group mainly wants a beach and a swim, not a snorkelling lesson? Bamboo. It's part of the same national park as Phi Phi, by the way.

What happens at Maya Bay on each trip?

This is where the two days really differ. Khai day: Maya Bay at 15:15, and you swim and snorkel from the water beside the bay, since the park limits swimming at the shore. Bamboo day: Maya Bay at 11:35, you walk in on the boardwalk, and no swimming inside the bay. Your water time that day is Bamboo itself and the snorkelling stop.

Park access to Maya Bay changes through the year. If your dates fall near the seasonal closure, read is Maya Bay open before you choose, and ask us in the chat which programme runs on your day.

The fishing stop: what it is, and when it's off

Fishing on the Bamboo day is hand-line fishing from the boat at Rang Yai island, at 15:05, with the captain, plus a rest on the island. Tackle is on board, the crew baits the line and shows you what to do, so no experience is needed. Think of it as a calm last stop, not a sport.

It depends on the weather: in strong wind the captain calls the fishing off. If fishing is the main reason you're going, our fishing trips from Phuket page has days built around it, from a sunrise trip at sea to the lake.

Price, park fee and what's included

The Khai day costs 2,000 ฿ for an adult and 1,800 ฿ for a child aged 4 to 9. The Bamboo day costs 2,300 ฿ and 2,000 ฿. On both, the national park fee is not in the price: it's paid in cash on the day, so bring baht in small notes. Younger children than four join free.

Both include the hotel transfer both ways, the speedboat, lunch on Phi Phi Don, masks and snorkels, an English-speaking guide and insurance. The Khai card also lists life jackets and drinking water on board; the Bamboo card lists the fishing tackle, water and fruit. Pileh Lagoon depends on the tide on both days, so the guide may change the order of the stops.
