Fishing Trips from Phuket: Sea, Island and Lake Options
By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 28 September 2026
The only full fishing day we sell from Phuket is sea fishing from sunrise: trolling, bottom fishing and lunch cooked from the catch. Four island and lake trips add a shorter fishing stop to a normal day out, which suits families where not everyone wants to hold a rod.

Is there a full fishing day from Phuket?
Where: the fishing grounds off Phuket and Racha Yai. How you get there: pickup between 05:30 and 06:30, arrival at Chalong pier at 06:45 and departure at 07:00 with breakfast on board. How long: back at the pier at 15:00.
The morning is trolling for tuna, barracuda and mahi-mahi from 07:30 to 09:30, then deep-water bottom fishing, checking the crab traps and watching the crew spearfish until 11:00. From 11:00 to 13:00 the boat stops at Racha Yai for snorkelling and swimming while lunch is cooked from the catch: grilled fish, tom yum and sashimi when the fish allows it. The way back is fishing along the route.
Bring a hat and sunscreen for the open deck, and something dry to change into after the Racha Yai swim; towels are handed out in the Comfort+ format.
What is included on the fishing day?
All fishing tackle and equipment, snorkelling gear with fins, a guide and a professional crew, cold drinks, tea, coffee and fruit, insurance and photos with the catch. In the Comfort+ format there is also breakfast on the boat, Wi-Fi, a towel for every guest and ice cream on return. You can take your catch with you.
The group is up to twenty. It is not recommended during pregnancy or with back problems, and a warm layer helps: it is cold at sea before sunrise.
Can I fish during an island day?
Phi Phi, Bamboo island and fishing at Rang Yai ends the Phi Phi route with deep-water fishing off Rang Yai island at 15:05, with the captain and crew and the tackle included. In strong wind the captain calls the fishing off.
Racha Yai and Coral island at sunrise has deep-water fishing from around half past nine, after the early landing on an empty Racha Yai. The Phi Phi two-day trip stops at Rang Yai on the way home, with deep-water fishing for anyone who wants it, also cancelled in bad weather.
Is there freshwater fishing?
On the Cheow Lan lake tour, fishing for red tilapia happens at 14:00, after lunch at a floating restaurant in the middle of the lake in Khao Sok national park, and it comes with a swim. It is gentle fishing in still water, surrounded by limestone cliffs up to 960 metres high.
The drive to the lake takes around two and a half hours each way, so this is a landscape day with fishing in it rather than a fishing trip.
- A whole day of trolling and bottom fishing — Sea fishing from sunrise
- Phi Phi plus a rod at the end — Phi Phi, Bamboo and Rang Yai
- Empty island beach plus a rod — Racha Yai at sunrise
- Still water and jungle cliffs — Cheow Lan lake
How does the fishing day run, hour by hour?
The idea behind the early start is simple: boats that leave later arrive at spots other boats have already worked. After breakfast on board and the run out, trolling for the bigger fish takes the first two hours. Deep-water bottom fishing follows, along with the crab traps and a demonstration of spearfishing by the crew.
At Racha Yai you can swim and snorkel with fins, mask and snorkel from the boat's kit while the crew cooks, and bottom fishing continues for anyone who wants to stay with the rod. The boat is roomy, with a shaded rest area, which matters on a day of six to seven hours at sea. Rain ponchos are handed out if the weather turns.
At the pier there are photos with the catch before the transfer back to the hotels. Cooking your catch at a restaurant afterwards is possible, but it is arranged separately and not part of the price.
What should I know before booking a fishing trip?
Children aged 4 to 9 pay the child price. Every tour in our catalogue runs with an English-speaking guide. Weather decides fishing more than anything else on the sea: the captain can shorten or cancel the fishing part, and the programme changes with the conditions.
Booking happens in the chat: send the date and your hotel, and tell us if the fishing matters more than the islands, so we point you to the right boat.

Questions people ask
What fish can you catch off Phuket?
On our sunrise fishing day the trolling targets tuna, barracuda and mahi-mahi, followed by deep-water bottom fishing. What bites depends on the day.
Is fishing tackle included?
Yes. All tackle and equipment are included on the fishing day, and fishing tackle is included on the Phi Phi, Bamboo and Rang Yai trip.
Can I keep the fish?
Yes. On the sunrise fishing day you can take your catch with you, and lunch on board is cooked from it.
What time does the fishing trip start?
Pickup is between 05:30 and 06:30, and the boat leaves Chalong pier at 07:00. You are back at the pier at 15:00.
Is fishing cancelled in bad weather?
It can be. The captain shortens or calls off the fishing in strong wind, and the programme changes with the weather.
Is there fishing suitable for children?
Yes. Tilapia fishing on Cheow Lan lake is calm freshwater fishing, and the lake trip suits children from about three.
