Which days are gentlest?

Which trips carry warnings?

Read the card before booking. The classic Similan day: not suitable with back or knee problems — the Sail Rock climb and the long day. Phi Phi at sunrise and the sunrise fishing boat: not recommended with back problems, because the speedboat ride is bumpy. The eleven-islands day runs about fourteen hours. Big boat or speedboat?

Where there is a choice, the bigger, steadier boat. On the classic Similan day the big boat rides smoother and has room to move — though its card still rules out back and knee problems. On a speedboat, sit towards the back, where the bounce is softer. See speedboat or big boat.

What about land days?

The sightseeing tour is the easiest. The Phang Nga and Samet Nangshe day is long (06:30 to 17:30) but mostly by coach, with the viewpoint reached by pickup truck. Elephant beach and Mantra Spa is slow-paced, ending in mineral pools. Temples on these days need covered shoulders and knees. The Phang Nga skywalk card lists every stop with its time. Is the sightseeing tour comfortable?

It is the easiest day we sell: pickup at 08:45, an air-conditioned minibus, short walks at each stop — the viewpoints over Kata and Karon, the windmill viewpoint, Promthep cape, the Big Buddha viewpoint, Wat Chalong, the old town, Rang Hill — and back around 15:00. What about a longer island day at an easy pace?

Krabi tropical paradise: a 09:00 pier call, four islands with beach time, only one optional climb, and the sunset on a sandbar before the pier at 18:30. The Racha and Coral speedboat is another steady option — forty minutes out, a long morning on Racha Yai, an afternoon on Coral island — though the speedboat can be bumpy on the crossing.

Is a two-day trip a good idea?

For fit older travellers who handle boats well, a night on Phi Phi Don splits the crossings over two days and gives the island in the quiet evening and morning. The hotel, dinner and breakfast are included; the evening programme is optional. Pack one small bag, and leave a free day after it. What about the heat?

It is the main effort on every trip, more than any walk. Pick trips that end by mid-afternoon — Coral island from Rawai (14:00), the sightseeing tour (around 15:00), the skywalk sunrise (13:00) — or have long shaded breaks, like lunch on stilts in Phang Nga Bay. Carry water; on the sightseeing tour, drinks are not included.
