Racha Yai or Coral Island: Where to Snorkel on a Day from Phuket
By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 28 September 2026
For snorkelling from Phuket we would pick Racha Yai: our speedboat day gives it the morning at Patok bay with masks, and the sunrise trip lands there at 06:40 and adds a separate coral-reef snorkel stop before Coral island. Coral island is the shorter, simpler option, and the half-day trip from Rawai snorkels in Hin Dam bay after lunch and is back at the pier at 14:00.

The short answer, trip by trip
We sell three days that reach these two islands. Which one is better for a mask depends less on the island than on how much of the day each trip gives the water.
- Snorkelling is the reason you're going — Racha Yai and Coral island at sunrise
- A full day with a long Racha morning and a beach afternoon — Racha and Coral by speedboat
- A first try, small children or only half a day — Coral island from Rawai
- Parasailing or a banana boat as well — the speedboat day, paid on the beach
Racha Yai on the speedboat day
Pickup 08:00–08:30, a safety briefing at Chalong at 08:30, and the speedboat leaves at 09:00. Forty minutes later you're at Racha Yai, and from 09:40 to 12:00 the time is yours at Patok bay: swimming, the beach and snorkelling. Mask and snorkel are included.
At 12:00 the boat moves to Coral island for lunch. From 13:30 to 15:30 there is snorkelling again, next to parasailing, banana boats and sea scooters run by beach operators and paid on the spot. Back at Chalong at 16:40 and at the hotel by 17:30. The crossing can be bumpy, so take something beforehand if you get seasick. If you are still choosing the boat rather than the beach, speedboat or catamaran for Racha and Coral compares the three trips that reach Racha Yai. The island itself, from Patok Bay to the kayaks, is on Racha Yai: what to expect.
Racha Yai at sunrise
The early version gives Racha the longest stretch. Pickup at 04:30–05:00 with a breakfast box, the speedboat at 06:00, sunrise at sea around 06:30. From 06:40 to 10:30 you're on Racha Yai with the beach, snorkelling, viewpoints and deep-sea fishing at 09:30; kayaks and paddleboards cost extra on the spot. For a full day of fishing with a Racha Yai swim at midday, see is the sunrise fishing trip from Phuket worth it.
Then a separate snorkel stop over coral reefs from 10:40 to 11:30, and only after that Coral island, for lunch on the beach and free time until 14:50. Back at the pier at 15:30. Masks, snorkels and disposable mouthpieces are included. Bring a warm layer for the dark start; the card doesn't recommend this trip during pregnancy.
Coral island from Rawai
This is the short one. Meet at Rawai pier at 08:30 for coffee and tea (the hotel pickup comes earlier and is in the price), leave at 09:00 and land on Coral Beach about half an hour later. The morning is for swimming and the beach; water activities there are paid separately.
Lunch at 12:00, seafood and Thai food. At 13:00 the boat takes you round to Hin Dam bay on the far side of the island to snorkel among corals and reef fish, and at 14:00 you're back at Rawai. The park fee, masks, lunch, soft drinks and life jackets are included; alcohol and personal spending are not. Every tour in our catalogue runs with an English-speaking guide. Book at least 24 hours ahead. What the island itself is like, beach and water sports included, is on Coral Island: what to expect.
So which is better for snorkelling?
If the mask is the point, Racha Yai, and at sunrise if you can face the alarm. Both Racha trips build the morning around the water there, while on the speedboat day Coral island shares its afternoon with the water-sports boats.
For a very first try, a small child or a half day that has you back by early afternoon, Coral from Rawai. One snorkel stop, away from the beach, and the afternoon free. And if you came for the Similans and they're closed, are the Similan Islands open tells you when they reopen; until then Racha Yai is the snorkelling day we'd point you to. And if the other candidate is Khai island on a Phi Phi day, Khai island or Racha Yai compares the two. Weighing Racha Yai against a whole Phi Phi day instead? See Racha Yai or Phi Phi from Phuket.
Non-swimmers and children
Life jackets come on all three trips. The speedboat card puts it plainly: being able to swim makes the snorkelling stops much better, so a non-swimmer will enjoy the beach more than the reef. On the speedboat day children under four travel free; on the sunrise and Rawai trips children aged 4 to 9 pay the child price. More on picking an island with a child is on Racha or Phi Phi with kids.
