Phuket Islands on Your Own or with a Tour?
By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 28 September 2026
You can reach most places our tours go on your own — a ferry to Phi Phi, a drive and a longtail to James Bond island, a bus to Krabi. A tour trades freedom for logistics: hotel pickup, the boat, lunch, park entry and a planned route around the tides, in one booking.

What do I arrange myself if I go alone?
The road to the pier — all tour piers are on the east coast. The boat: a ferry seat to Phi Phi, bought before the day in high season, or a longtail agreed with the boatman at a Phang Nga pier. The park fee, paid at the entrance. Food, water and snorkelling gear. And the return, planned in advance: the last boats go well before dark.
For James Bond island that means about two hours at the wheel each way; for Krabi, a ferry across the bay or a bus around it. On a tour the choice is simpler: Samet Nangshe or James Bond island compares our two Phang Nga days.
What does going alone give me?
Your own timetable: you arrive when you decide, stay longer where you like, skip what bores you. Early starters can beat the midday crowds in Phang Nga Bay. And you can stop along the way — a temple, a viewpoint, a market.
It works best for confident drivers used to Thai roads, and for people moving on to Phi Phi or Krabi with luggage anyway.
What does a tour give me?
Nothing to organise. The minivan collects you at the hotel and brings you back. The route is assembled and sequenced for the tide — Pileh Lagoon at high water, the Ice Cream Cave at low. Lunch, park fees on most trips, masks and jackets are included, and a guide explains what you are looking at.
And some things are hard to do alone: sea kayaks into the Phang Nga caves with a guide paddling, Maya Bay at seven on the sunrise boat, a night on Phi Phi Don with dinner and a fire show arranged. For the James Bond island day, how to book a James Bond island tour shows what we need from you.
Which places are easiest on your own?
Coral island from Rawai: the pier is at the southern tip and longtails wait by the boatmen's hut — see Rawai pier. Phi Phi, if you are staying the night there anyway, by ferry — see Phuket to Phi Phi. James Bond island, if someone is happy to drive — see the guide. For a Phi Phi day trip instead, how to book a Phi Phi speedboat tour lists the steps. If you'd rather leave the boat to us, Racha or Coral island for snorkelling compares our three trips to those islands. What a tour day on Coral Island looks like is on Coral Island, Phuket.
What does a tour cost compared with going alone?
The tour price is in the table below; it covers transfer, the boat, lunch, a guide, insurance and on most trips the park fees. Going alone, you pay the ferry or boat, the park fee at the entrance, the road or taxi to the pier, food and gear hire separately. For a couple with a car the sums can come out lower; for bigger groups, and once everything is added, the gap usually narrows.
Can I mix both?
Yes: an easy place on your own — a longtail to Coral island from Rawai — and a tour for the harder ones, like the Similans or a day in Phang Nga Bay with kayaks. Keep the tour for the day where logistics would eat the most time. The Similans also have a season of their own, laid out on are the Similan Islands open. Booking a Similan day with us is on how to book a Similan islands tour.
What about the weather?
It applies to both. When the authorities close the sea, ferries and longtails stop too. On a tour, the trip moves to another date or the payment comes back; going alone, you rearrange it yourself. Either way, keep a spare day in the plan. On a three-day stay that spare day matters even more; three days in Phuket shows how to plan it.
Which is better with children?
Usually the tour: hotel pickup, lunch arranged, jackets of the right size on board, and a guide who knows which stops are shallow. Going alone with small children means carrying all of that yourself, often on a long road to the pier.
Can you help if I go alone?
We sell tours, not ferry tickets or boat hire, but our guides answer questions in the chat. For the independent routes, our pages on Rawai pier, Chalong pier and Phuket piers have the drive times and what to agree before you leave. Somewhere between the two, a private trip on request is described on private tours from Phuket.
Which are easier on a tour?
The Similans: a pre-dawn drive, the park registering visitors at the pier, and a crossing of open water — our trips collect from Phuket and Khao Lak. Long combined routes like the eleven-islands day. Anything with small children, where hotel pickup and a planned lunch matter more than freedom. Diving is another: on our beginner scuba diving day the instructor, the equipment and the dive boat come together. If you want the river and the quads on the same day, read is the rafting and ATV day from Phuket worth it.
Whichever you choose, keep a spare day in case the sea closes. Want elephants without a ride? Elephant beach, Samet Nangshe and Mantra Spa: is it worth it covers that day.

Questions people ask
Can I visit Phi Phi without a tour?
Yes, by ferry from the east coast of Phuket. A tour adds hotel pickup, lunch and the Phi Phi Leh stops.
Can I go to James Bond island on my own?
Yes: about two hours by road to a Phang Nga pier, then a longtail hired on the spot.
Is it cheaper to go alone?
It can be for a couple with a car; for bigger groups the difference shrinks once you add the boat, fees and transport.
What is hardest to do on my own?
The Similans, and long combined routes like the eleven-islands day.
Do tours include park fees?
Most do; two Phi Phi speedboat days collect the fee in cash on the day.
Can I hire a longtail at Rawai?
Yes, at the boatmen's hut at the start of the pier. Agree the return time first.
