Phuket Tours in October: Racha, Krabi, Rafting and the Similans

By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 2 October 2026

October is one of Phuket's two wettest months, so plan it around the sea: boat trips run on the days the sea is open and are confirmed the evening before or that morning, while land days such as rafting and the Krabi lakes don't depend on it. The Similan islands reopen from mid-October, and sheltered Phang Nga Bay is the calmest sea day of the month.

What October weather looks like on paper

The Thai Meteorological Department's 30-year averages for its Phuket station give October about 336 mm of rain spread over roughly 23 rainy days, close to September's 350 mm and well above November's 178 mm. The prevailing wind in October is still from the west; from November it swings round to the north-east. Its Krabi station records October as the wettest month there, at about 293 mm.

Averages aren't a forecast, and a 'rainy day' in a climate table doesn't mean rain all day. What closes the sea is wind and swell, and that decision is taken by the authorities and the captain on the morning, for everyone at once. If it goes against you, the trip moves to another date or the payment comes back.

Racha Yai in October: how rough is the boat?

It can be bumpy. The crossing is about forty minutes by speedboat, which is short, but it's open water, and our Racha card says outright that the speedboat can be bumpy and to take something beforehand if you get seasick. In one of the wettest months of the year, nobody can promise you a flat sea a week ahead.

What helps: book Racha for early in your stay so a cancelled day can move, sit towards the back of the boat, and take the tablet before you board. If the forecast for your date looks wild, swap to a sheltered or land day and come back to Racha later.

The calmer sea day: Phang Nga Bay

James Bond island is the sea trip we'd put first in October. It's a drive to Phang Nga and then a longtail inside the bay, between limestone islands that break the wind, with a kayak through the sea caves and lunch on stilts in Koh Panyi. Our card describes the longtails as being on sheltered water. Every tour in our catalogue runs with an English-speaking guide.

Weather can still change the programme, and some caves are only passable at certain tides, so the order of stops may shift. That's normal for the bay in any month.

Krabi in October: by sea or by road

There are two Krabi days, and October treats them differently. The Krabi four islands trip is a sea day, so it runs when the sea is open, and its card adds that the programme shifts a little with the season and that weather can change the order of the stops.

Secrets of Krabi is the land day: the Emerald lake you can swim in, the Blue lake you look at, a hot waterfall, lunch and the Tiger Cave temple. Its card says nothing in the day depends on boats, so it runs on days the island trips are cancelled. That makes it the safer Krabi plan for October; the card does warn that the route can change with the weather and the times are approximate.

    Rafting in October, for beginners

Rafting is one of the best October days. Our rafting and elephant spa card calls it one of the best rainy-day options, because you're getting wet anyway and none of it depends on the sea. The river is a mountain river with modest rapids, an instructor steers every raft, no experience is needed, and the minimum age is six.

In the wet months the river tends to run brisker than in the dry season. Wear clothes you don't mind soaking and bring a change for the ride home, plus a light rain jacket; the card lists one as not included.

The Similans in mid-October, and what to plan

The Similan national park closes for the monsoon from mid-May to mid-October, so the season opens partway through the month. If your dates fall around the reopening, check them before you plan around a Similan day; are the Similan islands open covers the details.

For an October week, put the land days in the middle, one sea day early, and keep a free day behind it. Send your dates, your hotel and everyone's ages in the chat; payment by card online is agreed there once the booking is confirmed, and children under four travel free, without a separate seat or meals. Surin follows the same season; see Similan or Surin Islands.

Worth knowingIn October, book the sea day you care most about early in your stay and keep the next day free. If the sea is closed, the trip moves rather than disappears.

    Questions people ask

Is the boat ride to Racha Island rough in October?

It can be. The speedboat crossing is about forty minutes of open water, and October is one of Phuket's wettest months. If the sea is closed, the trip moves to another date or the payment comes back.

Are Phang Nga rafting tours suitable for beginners in October?

Our rafting day, yes. No experience is needed, an instructor steers every raft and the minimum age is six. The card calls it one of the best rainy-day options.

Is the Blue Pool open in October?

Our Secrets of Krabi day visits the Blue lake and the Emerald lake and doesn't depend on boats, so it runs when island trips are cancelled. The Blue lake is for looking at; you swim in the Emerald lake.

Can I do a Krabi trip from Phuket in October?

Yes. Secrets of Krabi goes by road and runs whatever the sea is doing; the Krabi four islands boat runs on the days the sea is open.

Which island trips should I plan for mid-October?

James Bond island in sheltered Phang Nga Bay first, Racha and Coral early in your stay, and the Similans once the park has reopened from mid-October.

When do the Similan islands reopen?

From mid-October. The national park closes for the monsoon from mid-May to mid-October.
