Railay, in Krabi, is a beach with no road to it, under vertical limestone walls — you can only arrive by boat. From Phuket, our route there is Four pearls of the Andaman Sea, a two-day trip that stops at Phra Nang beach and the Princess Cave on day one and sleeps on Phi Phi Don.

Why is Railay hard to reach from Phuket?
No road. Railay sits on the sea side of Krabi province, cut off by cliffs, so everything arrives by boat — including you. That rules it out of our one-day Krabi trips: the land day goes to lakes and temples, the island day to Hong and the sandbars. What the one-day Krabi island trip does visit is on Krabi four islands tour from Phuket.
The card for Four pearls puts it bluntly: you would need a separate trip from Phuket to see it otherwise.
What does the Four pearls day look like?
Pickup at 06:50, the boat at 08:50. The morning is Phang Nga Bay: Panak island, a landing on James Bond island at 10:10, canoes through the mangroves and caves of Talu, lunch in Panyi village. Then across into Krabi.
At 13:50 you reach Phra Nang beach at Railay, with the Princess Cave and time on the sand. At 16:05 the Twin islands and Chicken island of Krabi, a snorkelling stop over the reef, and check-in on Phi Phi Don at 16:50. A walk to the island viewpoint, dinner at the hotel, a fire show on the beach. As a rule the hotel is Andaman Beach Resort, or one of the same class if it's full; see which hotel is on the Four Pearls tour. And day two?
Phi Phi Leh in the morning: Maya Bay at 09:00, a swim in Pileh Lagoon, the Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, a snorkel off Phi Phi Don. Lunch on the island, Bamboo island in the afternoon, back at the pier at 16:30. If the bay is closed that morning, it's seen from the boat; see is Maya Bay open.

Is Railay worth two days?
If you want Railay, James Bond island and Phi Phi without three separate boat days, yes — that is exactly what Four pearls is built for. What is the evening on Phi Phi Don like?
After check-in at 16:50 there is free time in the village and a walk to the island viewpoint at 17:20. Dinner at the hotel is at 19:50. At 20:50 comes the bar, a fire show by Thai champions and a cocktail on the beach; later, a Thai boxing bar for anyone brave enough to try, and the beach parties.
All of it is optional. Breakfast is at 07:30 the next morning and check-out at 08:30, so an early night is not a bad idea.
How does Four pearls compare with Five pearls?
Both sleep on Phi Phi Don and both start in Phang Nga Bay. Four pearls goes to Railay and Chicken island; Five pearls goes to Lao Lading and the Hong island viewpoint, adds the Ice Cream Cave on Panak and a night swim among glowing plankton, and runs in the Comfort+ format for groups of 24 to 38.

What is Chicken island?
One of the Krabi islands, stopped at on day one of Four pearls at 16:05 together with the Twin islands, followed by a snorkelling stop over the coral reefs before the crossing to Phi Phi Don. It is a short stop between Railay and the night on Phi Phi.
Who is the trip for?
Couples and friends who want the big three — Phang Nga Bay, Krabi's cliffs and Phi Phi — in one go, with a hotel night in between. Families with older children who cope with long boat days. What should I pack?
