Krabi is the province across Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, and a Krabi day goes one of two ways. By boat to the Hong islands and the sandbars, or by road inland to hot springs, the Emerald lake and the Tiger Cave temple. Railay and Chicken island only come on a two-day trip with a night on Phi Phi.

What is the Krabi island day like?
Slow, and that is the point. Krabi tropical paradise has no pre-dawn wake-up: pier at 09:00, boat at 10:00. First stop Naka Yai for about ninety minutes of beach games and water toys. Then Pakbia, where a sand spit shows up at low tide and you can wander the tidal maze.
The middle of the day is Hong island — two hours of it. You climb to the viewpoint over the lagoon, come down, snorkel in the bay. Lao Lading at 16:20. And at 17:50 you are standing on a sandbar watching the sun go down, which is the bit people talk about afterwards. Pier at 18:30.
Lunch, soft drinks, fruit, a cocktail served in a coconut and the park fees are included, plus masks, snorkels and jackets. Groups run 24 to 38.
What is the inland Krabi day like?
Secrets of Krabi is the inland counterweight to the boat days, and everything on it is green rather than blue. Pickup is between 05:00 and 06:00 for the drive to mainland Krabi. At 09:00 you walk through old rainforest in Bang Khram forest park, then swim in the Emerald lake, where the water is warm and mineral. The Blue lake next to it glows turquoise and is for looking at only.
Before lunch there is a hot waterfall running out of the jungle and natural thermal baths in the forest. After a traditional Thai lunch at a local café comes the Tiger Cave temple, where 1,260 steps climb to a view over the whole plain. The climb is optional: the cave monastery at the bottom is the alternative, and nobody makes you go up.
The afternoon ends with an elephant, fed for 100 ฿ on the spot, and the Klong singing cave, where the stalactites hold a note. You are back at the hotel around 17:40. It is a long day with an early start, and temples require shoulders and knees covered.
How do I get to Railay and Chicken island?
Railay is not on any of our one-day Krabi programmes. It comes on Four pearls of the Andaman Sea, a two-day trip that starts with James Bond island and canoeing at Talu in Phang Nga Bay, then crosses into Krabi for Phra Nang beach at Railay and the Princess Cave, the Twin islands and Chicken island, and a snorkelling stop before the night on Phi Phi Don.
Five pearls, also two days, stops at Lao Lading and climbs to the Hong island viewpoint on the first afternoon. The eleven-islands day does the same inside a single long run, reaching Lao Lading at 12:50 and Hong island at 14:00 before heading on to Phi Phi.
Both two-day trips include the hotel room on Phi Phi Don, two lunches, a dinner and a breakfast. The evening programme is optional: the fire show and the beach bars are there if you want them, and the hotel is on the beach if you do not.
Which Krabi day should I choose?
If you want an island day without getting up in the dark, Krabi tropical paradise is the natural pick: a 09:00 start, calm water, four different stops and a sunset at the end. If the sea is rough, or you have already done two boat days, Secrets of Krabi gives you swimming and a view without a boat in sight.
If Railay is the reason you are going to Krabi, book Four pearls and get Phi Phi and James Bond island with it. How far is Krabi from Phuket?
On the inland Krabi day, pickup is between 05:00 and 06:00 and the first stop is at 09:00, so allow three hours or a little more by road. The island day reaches the Krabi islands by boat.
Can you do Krabi as a day trip from Phuket?

Do I have to climb the 1,260 steps at the Tiger Cave temple?
No. The climb is optional. The cave monastery at the foot of the hill is the alternative for anyone who would rather stay below.
Can you swim in the Emerald lake?
Yes. The Emerald lake is warm mineral water and swimming is part of the programme. The Blue lake next to it is for photographs only.
Is Railay beach included in a day trip?
