Racha Yai, Phuket: What to Expect on a Tour

By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 3 October 2026

Racha Yai is the island south of Phuket that our cards give the clearer water, about forty minutes away by speedboat, and on our tours the time there is spent in and around Patok Bay: swimming, snorkelling, the beach, kayaks and paddleboards on the sunrise trip. It's quiet early and busy by late morning, so the boat you pick matters as much as the island.

    What you actually do there

Mostly you get in the water. On the Racha and Coral speedboat you have Patok Bay from 09:40 until noon, which is long enough to snorkel, swim, dry off on the sand and go back in. Masks and snorkels are on the boat. Our Racha card is straightforward about who gets the most out of it: people who can swim. If someone in your group can't, the life jacket stays on and the beach does the rest.

The sunrise trip adds more to do. Between 06:40 and 10:30 there's the beach, snorkelling, kayaks and paddleboards (those two are paid on the spot), the viewpoints, and deep-water fishing from around half past nine. Then a separate snorkel over the coral reefs from 10:40 before the boat moves on to Coral island.

    Why people go: the water

Two of our cards back this up. The Racha and Coral card compares the two islands and gives Racha Yai the clearer water and better visibility. The catamaran card, which visits Racha Yai in the morning and Phi Phi in the afternoon, puts the best snorkelling visibility of its whole day at Racha Yai.

Timing changes the picture, though. The sunrise card says Racha Yai gets busy by late morning, so the earlier you land, the emptier the beach. On the sunrise boat that's 06:40; on the catamaran it's 09:00, and the card still calls it an empty beach; on the standard speedboat it's 09:40.

Four boats that stop at Racha Yai

The Racha and Coral speedboat is the simple one: pickup around eight, forty minutes across, the morning on Racha Yai, lunch and the afternoon on Coral island, back at the hotel by about half past five. The sunrise speedboat collects you at half past four with a breakfast box and has the island to itself for the first hours.

The catamaran is a different kind of day, a two-deck boat with a slide and a pool that does Racha Yai from nine to eleven and then Phi Phi, Maya Bay late in the afternoon and a sunset stop at Maiton. The sunrise fishing boat anchors off Racha Yai from 11:00 to 13:00 for a swim, a snorkel and lunch cooked from the morning's catch.

    • →Snorkelling and a beach, normal start — Racha and Coral islands by speedboat
    • →An empty beach and kayaks at dawn — Racha Yai and Coral island at sunrise
    • →Racha Yai plus Phi Phi and a sunset — Phi Phi and Racha Yai by catamaran
    • →Fishing first, Racha Yai at midday — Sea fishing from sunrise

    The crossing and the season

Forty minutes by speedboat is short as Phuket boat trips go, but it's open sea, and the Racha card warns that the speedboat can be bumpy: take something beforehand if you get seasick. The sunrise card doesn't recommend that trip during pregnancy.

For calm water, aim for the dry months. The Thai Meteorological Department's 30-year averages for Phuket show February at about 24 mm of rain over three or four rainy days, and October at about 336 mm over more than twenty, with the prevailing wind from the west through the wet months. The boat goes only when the sea is open; if the authorities close it, the trip moves to another date or the payment comes back. October in particular is covered on Phuket tours in October.

Children, booking and what to bring

Children under four travel free, without a separate seat or meals; 4 to 9 pay the child price, ten and over the adult one. Send the tour, the date, your hotel and everyone's ages in the chat. The pier and the meeting time come in your booking confirmation, and payment by card online is agreed in the chat once the booking is confirmed.

Bring swimwear, a beach towel, waterproof sunscreen, a hat, a waterproof phone case and light beach shoes. On the sunrise boat add a warm layer, because it's cold at sea before the sun is up. Torn between this island and the famous one? Racha Yai or Phi Phi weighs them up. Booking the catamaran is set out on how to book the Phi Phi and Racha Yai catamaran. A private boat to Racha Yai is arranged on request: private tours from Phuket.

Worth knowingRacha Yai gets busy by late morning. If an empty beach is the point, the sunrise boat (on the island at 06:40) or the catamaran (09:00) beats the standard speedboat.

    Questions people ask

How long is the boat ride to Racha Yai?

About forty minutes by speedboat. On the Racha and Coral day the boat crosses between 09:00 and 09:40.

Is Racha Yai good for snorkelling?

Yes. Our Racha card gives it clearer water and better visibility than Coral island, and the speedboat day spends 09:40 to noon in Patok Bay. It's much better if you can swim.

When is Racha Yai least crowded?

Early. Our sunrise card says the island gets busy by late morning; the sunrise boat lands at 06:40 and the catamaran at 09:00.

Can you kayak at Racha Yai?

On the sunrise trip, yes: kayaks and paddleboards are available on Racha Yai and paid on the spot.

Is the boat to Racha Yai rough?

It can be. The Racha card says the speedboat can be bumpy and suggests taking something beforehand if you get seasick. The wet months bring more swell than the dry ones.

Do children go free to Racha Yai?

Children under four travel free, without a separate seat or meals. From 4 to 9 they pay the child price, and from ten the adult price applies.

Can I visit Racha Island without joining a combined Coral Island tour?

Yes. The Phi Phi and Racha Yai catamaran spends two hours on Racha Yai and then goes on to Phi Phi, and the sunrise fishing day stops at Racha Yai for snorkelling, a swim and lunch. A private boat to Racha Yai can also be arranged on request. Only the speedboat days pair it with Coral island.
