Racha Yai or Phi Phi from Phuket: Which Has Clearer Water and Quieter Beaches?

By the PhuketGO tour desk on Phuket — we book and run these trips every week · Updated 2 October 2026

For clear water and a quiet beach, Racha Yai is the better bet: on our catamaran, which visits both islands, the card puts the best snorkelling visibility of the day at Racha Yai in the morning, and the sunrise speedboat lands there at 06:40, before the beach gets busy. Phi Phi is the day for famous scenery, Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and the Viking Cave, and its quiet hours are early morning on the sunrise trip or after 16:00 on the catamaran.

    Where the water is clearer

Racha Yai has the edge, and two of our cards say so. The Racha and Coral speedboat card compares Racha Yai with Coral island and gives Racha the clearer water and the better visibility. The catamaran card goes further: that boat starts at Racha Yai and spends the afternoon around Phi Phi, and the best snorkelling visibility of its whole day is at Racha Yai, between 09:00 and 11:00.

The bigger difference is how long you stay in the water. A Racha day is built around one long swim. On the speedboat you have Patok Bay from 09:40 until noon, time enough to snorkel, swim and lie on the sand. A Phi Phi day spreads the water time over short stops: on the Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai day that means Khai island at 09:45, a swim and a snorkel around Monkey Beach, and at 15:15 snorkelling from the water beside Maya Bay, because park rules limit swimming right at its shore.

One fair warning from the Racha card: the snorkelling stops are much better if you can swim. Life jackets are on the included list of both Racha speedboats and both Phi Phi speedboats on this page. The island on its own is described on Racha Yai: what to expect on a tour.

Which beach is quieter, and at what hour

Neither island is quiet all day, so the hour you arrive matters more than the island. Racha Yai gets busy by late morning, as our sunrise card puts it. The sunrise speedboat leaves at 06:00, watches the sun come up in open water at 06:30 and lands at 06:40, so you get the beach and the reef before anyone else. The catamaran reaches Racha Yai at 09:00, and its card still calls it an empty beach.

On Phi Phi the pressure point is Maya Bay. The sunrise trip is there from 07:00 to 08:00, before the day boats. The catamaran comes at the other end of the day, 16:00 to 17:00, when the bay is quiet again. The classic Khai day reaches Maya Bay at 15:15, somewhere in between. How those two quiet hours compare is laid out on Maya Bay at sunrise or after 4 pm.

Coral island, the second half of both Racha speedboat days, is the opposite of quiet. The card describes an easy entry from the beach with everything else going on around it, and parasailing, banana boats and jet skis are run there by beach operators. Fine for lunch and a play in the water. Not the place for silence. What else happens on Coral Island is set out on Coral Island: what to expect on a tour.

How far each island is, and which boat goes

Racha Yai is the shorter ride. The speedboat crossing takes around forty minutes on our Racha and Coral card, and the whole day runs from an 08:00 pickup to the hotel at about 17:30. Phi Phi is further out: on the Khai day the speedboat leaves at 09:15, stops at Khai, and you step onto Phi Phi Don at 10:15; the boat heads back at 16:15.

Both are speedboat days, and the cards are honest that a speedboat can be bumpy. The Racha card suggests taking something beforehand if you get seasick; the Phi Phi sunrise card doesn't recommend that trip during pregnancy or with back problems for the same reason. The catamaran is the other kind of day: a two-deck boat with a slide, an inflatable pool, SUP boards and clear canoes, covering both islands between breakfast and sunset.

What the rest of each day looks like

After Racha Yai the speedboat crosses to Coral island between 12:00 and 12:30. Lunch is at a beachfront restaurant, then the afternoon is snorkelling and beach time until 16:00. The sunrise version keeps you on Racha Yai until 10:30, with kayaks and paddleboards (paid on the spot) and deep-water fishing from around half past nine, adds a reef stop at 10:40, and leaves Coral island for Phuket at 14:50.

After Khai, a Phi Phi day is a run of famous places: Monkey Beach, a buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don with vegetarian dishes, the Viking Cave and Pileh Lagoon in the early afternoon, Maya Bay at the end. Getting into Pileh Lagoon depends on the tide and on the captain, so the order can change. On the sunrise trip the same places come earlier, and Bamboo island takes the afternoon, from 12:50 to 14:20.

So the real choice is between one long, clear swim with a lazy afternoon, and a day of sights with shorter swims in between. Both are good days. They just aren't the same day.

    Which trip to book

My short answer: if clear water and a quiet beach are why you're asking, book the Racha Yai sunrise speedboat and live with the 04:30 pickup. If you also want to see Maya Bay at least once, take the catamaran, which gives you Racha Yai in the morning and Phi Phi in the afternoon, or go for the Phi Phi sunrise trip.

Comparing the Racha boats in more detail? Racha and Coral islands: speedboat or catamaran does exactly that, and Khai island or Racha Yai looks only at the snorkelling. With small children it's a different question, answered on Racha or Phi Phi with kids. On a short stay, three days in Phuket shows where that day fits. If the children are small, what a Coral Island tour costs a family adds a shorter half day to the comparison.

Booking, the pier and what to bring

Send the tour, the date and your hotel in the chat. Our tours leave from different piers, and the same tour can use another pier in a higher-class programme, so the pier and the meeting time come in your booking confirmation. Whether your area costs extra for the transfer depends on the tour and on where you stay; we name it in the chat before you pay.

If the authorities close the sea on your date, the trip moves to another date or the payment comes back. For the two sunrise boats, pack a warm layer: it's cold at sea before the sun is up. Reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof phone case are worth having on any of these days. For the catamaran, how to book the Phi Phi and Racha Yai catamaran has the steps.

Worth knowingPick the hour before the island. Racha Yai at 06:40 and Maya Bay at 07:00 come before the day boats; the same places at midday don't.

    Questions people ask

Is Racha Yai or Phi Phi better for clear water?

Racha Yai. Our catamaran visits both and puts the best snorkelling visibility of its day at Racha Yai in the morning, and the Racha days give you one long swim in Patok Bay instead of short stops between sights.

Is Racha Yai less crowded than Phi Phi?

Early in the day, yes. Racha Yai gets busy by late morning, so the sunrise boat lands at 06:40 and the catamaran arrives at 09:00. On Phi Phi the quiet hours at Maya Bay are 07:00 on the sunrise trip and after 16:00 on the catamaran.

How long is the boat ride to Racha Yai?

Around forty minutes by speedboat, according to our Racha and Coral card. The Phi Phi speedboat leaves at 09:15 and reaches Phi Phi Don at 10:15, with a stop at Khai island on the way.

Can I see Racha Yai and Phi Phi in one day?

Yes, on the catamaran: Racha Yai from 09:00 to 11:00, lunch on Phi Phi Don, Pileh Lagoon, Maya Bay between 16:00 and 17:00 and a sunset stop on the water beside Maiton island, heading back to Phuket at 19:00.

Is the speedboat to Racha Yai or Phi Phi bumpy?

It can be. The Racha card suggests taking something beforehand if you get seasick, and the Phi Phi sunrise card doesn't recommend that trip during pregnancy or with back problems because the ride is bumpy.

What if the sea is closed on my date?

The trip moves to another date or the payment comes back. The decision is made for the whole departure, not for one guest, and we tell you in the chat.
