Cheow Lan Lake or James Bond Island from Phuket: Which Day Trip?

How does the Cheow Lan day run?

It starts in the dark. Pickup is at 06:00, and at 08:00 you're on the Samet Nangshe viewpoint watching the sun come up over Phang Nga Bay. Then about an hour and a half through the jungle to the lake, a longtail from 11:20 past cliffs covered in forest, lunch at 13:00 at a floating restaurant in the middle of the water.

After lunch there's fishing for red tilapia and a swim in the lake, a short walk in the forest at 15:00 and, at 16:20, the Bang Tong temple, where a monk paints. Then the drive back to Phuket. Our card counts about two and a half hours on the road to the lake, so plan for a long, full day.

And the James Bond island day?

Pickup at 07:30–08:00 and ninety minutes to Phang Nga. A longtail from 09:30 takes you between the cliffs of the bay, you land on James Bond island for photos at the rock, and then a local boatman paddles your kayak through sea caves and hidden lagoons. Seafood lunch at a restaurant on stilts, a walk through the Koh Panyi village on the water, and you're back at the hotel around 18:00.

At low tide some caves can be closed, and the guide reorders the stops. The kayaking suits any level, since you sit and the boatman paddles.

Which is calmer, and which is harder?

If boats make you queasy, Cheow Lan is the safer choice: it's a lake, and the water is flat. The cost is the road, with more time in the minivan and the 06:00 start. James Bond island is on the sea, but the bay is sheltered and the longtail stays close to the cliffs, so it's a calm day for a sea trip.

Physically, neither is hard. The Cheow Lan jungle walk is short, and the temple needs covered shoulders and knees. Our Cheow Lan card says the lake can be cool, so bring a light layer.

With children, the Cheow Lan fishing for red tilapia is a welcome break between viewpoints, and children 4–9 pay 2,200 ฿. On the James Bond day, pack a spare set of clothes for after the kayak; the card recommends it.

Which would we book?

Seen the sea already, or worried about seasickness: Cheow Lan, for the lake and the sunrise. First time in the area and you want the postcard: James Bond island. Neither card lists a season closure, and in bad weather the programme can change on either. Already saw Samet Nangshe at sunrise on another trip? Then Cheow Lan repeats that part, and James Bond island gives you something new.
