The best tour in Phuket depends on the question you are really asking: first time here — Phi Phi; clear water — the Similans in season, Racha Yai otherwise. Small children or seasickness point to short crossings, Phang Nga Bay or a land day, and if you can spare it, a night on Phi Phi beats any single day.

First time on Phuket — which tour?
Phi Phi. It is the picture people come for — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don. The Khai island version is the gentlest way in: pickup at 07:30, the first stop in shallow water with fish at the sand, back at Chalong around 16:15.
Expect company at the famous stops. If the crowd bothers you more than an alarm clock, the sunrise trip has you in Maya Bay at seven, before the day boats.
Here for the water and the fish?
Then do not chase distance for its own sake. Racha Yai is forty minutes from Chalong and its water is clear — best early, on the sunrise trip. The Similans are the strongest reef we reach, with two snorkel stops on the classic day and turtles often seen on the early boat, but the park is only open from mid-October to mid-May.

Travelling with children?
The rule is simple: the shorter the crossing, the calmer the day. Coral island from Rawai (back at 14:00), Racha and Coral by speedboat (under-fours free), or the James Bond island day inside sheltered water. Long speedboat days are hard on small children, and the eleven-islands card says as much.

Sick of the sea, or prone to seasickness?
Go where the water is flat or absent. Phang Nga Bay with the kayaks runs in sheltered water. Rafting, elephants and waterfalls in Phang Nga, the Khao Lak safari, Cheow Lan lake, Secrets of Krabi with its warm lakes — none of them involves open sea.
They are also the days that still run when the authorities close the sea.
Only one free day?
Pick one direction instead of trying to see everything. Combined routes sound tempting, but more stops means shorter ones. If you truly want Phang Nga, Krabi and Phi Phi in one go, the eleven-islands day does it — in about fourteen hours door to door.
Otherwise: Phi Phi for the famous bays, James Bond island for the cliffs, Racha and Coral for beach time.
Which is best for a sunset?
Krabi tropical paradise: pier at 09:00, four islands — Naka Yai, Pakbia, Hong, Lao Lading — and a sunset from a sandbar at 17:50, back at 18:30. Which gives the best view from above?
The Samet Nangshe viewpoint over Phang Nga Bay — on the Phang Nga days, the elephant beach day, the Avatar world day and at sunrise on the Cheow Lan lake day. The glass bridges: the Samet Nangshe skywalk with coffee and dessert, or Beyond Skywalk at dawn on the sunrise trip.
