# How to Get from Phuket to Phi Phi: Ferry, Speedboat or Tour You reach Phi Phi from Phuket by boat from the east coast — a slow, steady ferry or a speedboat that takes roughly half the time. Children under four join free on most trips — each tour page says so. ## Which pier do boats to Phi Phi leave from? The east side of Phuket. Always. The archipelago lies to the east, so no passenger boat leaves from the western beaches where most visitors sleep — and that surprises people staying in Patong or Karon, who then spend part of the morning crossing the island by road. The main passenger hub is Rassada, next to Phuket Town; most regular ferries go from there. Some speedboats pick up at Chalong in the south, which is handier from Rawai, Nai Harn or Kata. The big ferry is slow and soft on the waves, with a deck, shade and room to walk — the calm choice with children or big bags. The speedboat cuts the time roughly in half and pays for it: the hull slaps the waves, and the cabin is closed. Get seasick? Take the larger boat and sit mid-ship, where it rocks least. At the bow you feel every wave; at the stern you smell the engine. In windy months the difference grows — slower boats keep running when the light speedboats are taken off first. ## I only want a day on Phi Phi. What is easiest? A day tour. You skip the pier, the ticket and the return timetable. Then you need a ferry ticket, not a tour, and we do not sell ferry tickets. A few things from people who have done it: leave the hotel with time to spare, because traffic around Phuket Town is heavy in the morning and boarding starts early. Buy the seat before the day of travel in high season; popular departures sell out. Speedboats do not always take large luggage — there is no hold, and suitcases ride under a cover at the bow. Phi Phi has no cars: from the pier your bags go by boat or by you, and a wheeled case bumps badly on the wooden walkways. A backpack is kinder. Plan the return at the same time; the last boats go well before dark. ## Which Phi Phi trip leaves earliest, and which gets back latest? Earliest: the sunrise boat, with pickup between four and half past four and the pier again at 15:30. Latest: the catamaran, back on Phuket at 19:00 after its sunset stop. In between sit the Khai island day (pickup 07:30, Chalong about 16:15) and the Bamboo island and fishing day (pickup 06:50, back at the pier at 16:30). Staying over changes the clock completely — the two-day trip has you back on the pier at 17:00 on day two, with a whole evening and morning on the island in between. ## How long does it take door to door? Longer than the sea crossing. The road from a west-coast hotel to an east-coast pier can take longer than the boat itself, so count the whole morning, not the crossing.
