A 4 am pickup the morning after a long flight is how people end up dozing through Maya Bay. The week really starts on day two. There are two versions. The Khai island one picks up between 07:30 and 08:30 and is back at Chalong pier around 16:15, from 2,000 ฿. The sunrise one collects you between four and half past four, and at seven you are standing in Maya Bay before the day boats arrive; from 2,300 ฿. In between. A full sea day that starts before seven leaves most people wanting a sunbed and a nap the next day. That is normal. Two long days back to back is where a holiday starts to feel like a job. So alternate them, and don't feel guilty about it. Yes, a two-day trip with a night on Phi Phi Don, placed midweek: Phi Phi over two days (from 4,300 ฿), Four pearls with Railay, or Five pearls with the Hong viewpoint. On the Phi Phi one the boat reaches the pier at 17:00 on day two, so keep the next day free and never put it right before your flight. A short sea day on day two: Coral island from Rawai, or Racha and Coral by speedboat (pickup 08:00 to 08:30, about forty minutes across to Patok Bay). Phi Phi on day three or four. A land day if there is energy left. Skip the two-day trips, unless a night on Phi Phi is the whole reason you came; then build the five days around it and drop the rest. Pick a calm day early in your stay and keep the day after it free. The classic big boat collects you between 05:30 and 06:30, drives an hour and a half to Tablamu pier and brings you back in the evening; from 2,600 ฿. Only a short trip, and only with an evening flight. Coral island from Rawai is back at the pier at 14:00, the sunrise fishing boat at 15:00. Anything that ends in the evening, like James Bond island, the catamarans or eleven islands, belongs to another day. The minivan takes you back to your hotel, not to the airport, and there is no luggage storage at the pier, so the bags wait at reception.
